STATION SIX - MEASURING WITH NON-STANDARD UNIT OF MEASURE
1. Skill/Content and Objective - Comparing units of measurement, measuring, and making predictions
2. Materials - Nonstandard units ti use for measuring, such as paper clips, wooden dowels, Unifix cubes, wooden cubes, blocks, Cuisinaire, rods, tiles, unsharpened pencils, straws, toothpicks, tongue depressors, body parts (e.g., hands, arms, feet).
3. Activity Description:
a.The student choose an item to measure with a paperclip and something to compare, e.g., a wrist or hand.
b.They predict how many paper clips they would need to measure their wrist or hand, then they measure the body part.
c. Each student in the group will make predictions and record actual measure. (Predictions and Measurements can be made and recorded for other body parts.)
4. Differentiation - Select a different item to use to measure with and begin predicting and measuring other items.
5. Assessment (Formative and Summative)
