STATION FIVE - COMPARING OBJECTS
1. Skill/Content and Objective - Comparing nonstandard units of measure; measuring weight; seriation; matching
2. Materials - 6-8 milk carton scales; wooden rulers (or wooden dowels); common objects; non-standard measuring materials. Make a recording tablet by stapling paper together.
3. Activity Description:
a. Choose an area in your room to set up the weighing station where there's the least amount of traffic.
b. Ask the student to compare weight of the common objects by holding a common object in each hand.
c. Place the common objects on the table in order according to weight, from the lightest common object to the heaviest, or vice versa.
d. Place the lightest (heaviest) common object into the scale.
e. Gently press the scale against the paper
f. Draw a line under the scale and record the common object's name.
g. Remove the common object.
h. Repeat the procedure until all the common objects are recorded.
i. Check to see if your predictions were correct.
